Top Ten Tuesday – Why I Read and Blog

February 18, 2014 General, Top Ten Tuesday 13

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by the blog THE BROKE AND THE BOOKISH.  Every Tuesday, I love seeing these lists around my favorite blogs so I decided to jump into the fun and participate.  Please click the graphic above to see what other blogs are posting their top ten’s today!

The topic today is a good one:  the top ten reasons you read and blog.  I do both of these things for a lot of reasons but here are a few of the most important ones…

Why I like to read…

This reason is probably the most important one for me.  Books and films play the same role in my life…they are fantastic vehicles for visiting new worlds, meeting new people, and having a good laugh or a good cry.  You’re never limited in a book — you can look into the life of a werewolf, share in the romance of a Duke, go on a journey into a new galaxy, anything is possible and so the thought of losing myself in worlds of infinite possibility is exciting.

Connected to the first reason, I also love to read because I tend to be an anxious person.  I internalize a lot, I get way stressed out about work and life and a good book gives me a break from it all and lets me sink into a story that takes me away from all the anxiety.

I read a lot of urban fantasy and paranormal romance.  Sometimes you can burn out on a genre and nothing feels new or original.  I love it when I read a new author, or a favorite author writes a new series, and there’s something very original about it.  Whether it’s a strong character or stellar world-building or a romance that defies expectations, there’s something exciting about discovering something new and it’s one of my favorite parts about being an avid reader.

Is there a better feeling?  Well, my daughter’s smile or sharing a laugh with my husband might be better but you get what I mean.  You find a book you love, are confident enough to share it with someone, and they love it as much as you do…good stuff.

If a book is really good and I connect with it on some level, sometimes it allows me to explore certain aspects of my life, my personality, or my actions and it can be a very enlightening experience.

Why I like to blog…

I work in a collaborative environment.  And I love it.  But it’s nice to have something that’s all mine, that I have the final word on, that I set the pace for, that I determine the direction of…it’s nice to have something like that in your life, no matter how small.

I only have a handful of friends who like to read the same stuff I do so it’s been really great to find other bloggers and readers who share my tastes and who get excited by a great UF or PNR.

I’ve been able to interact with some of my favorite authors via my blog and that is just CRAZY!

This blog has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and get a bit creative in areas I never thought I could, namely blog design, features, etc.  I know it doesn’t look like much but I did all the design elements in the header and I used the fantastic Tweak Me theme by Creative Whim to manually set a lot of the blog’s look.  The design might not be as polished as some others but it’s all mine and I love it.

There are some genres I never thought I’d be interested in but thanks to fellow bloggers and their great reviews, I’ve become much more open to new areas of reading.  Who knew some of my favorite reads last year would be historical romance?  Contemporary Romance?  Romantic Suspense?  These are all genres I never thought I’d be interested in but, as it turns out, I’ve found books I love and now there’s no turning back.

Why do you love to read and/or blog?

Great TTT, Lee. I read to escape, too. I just love being able to go to different worlds or just new places all because of a book. And I didn’t think I would be blogging for this long. I’ve tried before but the book blog has lasted the longest. I think it’s because it’s something I am passionate about and I love talking books with other people. Plus I get to meet awesome authors and bloggers (like you!), which makes it even more awesome.
